History of Eroica
Founded in 1997, the Eroica is not a bicycle race but a real journey through time. It usually takes place around the first weekend of October in the province of Siena, Tuscany.
What are the conditions to participate ?
The conditions to participate are very precise: only steel bikes dating from 1987 are accepted; gears are allowed, but their levers must be fixed on the diagonal tube of the frame; the internal brake cablery of the frame is forbidden, as well as pedals with automatic blocks. Modern outfits, as well as recent sunglasses, are also prohibited, as riders are encouraged to look in keeping with the era of their riding companion.
Not a competition … Eroica is a manifestation !
The Eroica is not a competition, and there are no prizes for first place. The start is in the so-called ‘French’ form, at dawn with some freedom in the choice of time slots. The choice of routes is also free: the most experienced participants will choose the “Lungo” route of 209km and 3200m of ascent; the rest will be able to choose between several intermediate routes ranging from 32 to 130km.
The reputation of this race is such that the number of places has been limited to 7000 people. And to meet the growing demand for events like this, the Eroica is now being exported to other countries such as Spain, Japan, California and South Africa.
Most of the routes proposed in the original version cross the Chianti region, along the white dirt roads (or “Strade Bianche”) that make this event famous. Many refreshment points offer local products, including the famous Chianti wine and products from the surrounding farms. It is also an opportunity to shop for vintage parts and accessories at the vintage market in Gaiole in Chianti.
